Frequently Asked Questions

What if I have food allergies or sensitivities? Can I still take the series?

Yes! Every one of Nourished Kitchen’s multimedia series and our meal plans are designed with those suffering from food allergies in mind.  All classes and meal plans are suitable for those who maintain gluten-/grain-/nut-/soy-free diets out of necessity or preference.  Where common allergens (excluding allergies to eggs), we include substitutions.  Alternatively, you can enroll in modules that exclude your allergen.

  • Online Class: How to Cook Real Food: The bulk of the weekly lessons are allergen-friendly.  Lesson #3 on Yogurts, Kefirs & Cultured Dairy Foods focuses on milk products; however, information is also given on preparing coconut milk yogurt and coconut water kefir.  Lesson #7 focuses on nuts, coconut and seeds, however for nut-allergic individuals accommodations are given to avoid tree nuts.  Lesson #8 and #9 focus on grains and baked goods; alternatives are given for gluten-free grains, sourdoughs and baked goods.  Note that Lesson #7 covers grain-free baking.  All remaining lessons do not feature major allergens.

What if I’m on a restricted [low-carb, paleo, GAPS/SCD, WAPF, veg*n] diet? Can I still take this series?

Yes!  Every one of Nourished Kitchen’s multimedia series are designed for those with restrictive diets.    While the site’s philosophy centers on traditional foods and the work of Dr. Weston A Price, those adhering to low-carb, paleo, GAPS/SCD and even veg*n or kosher diets will benefit from the installments, videos and other downloads.

What equipment do I need to purchase?

You are not required to purchase any special equipment beyond what is available in most kitchens.  Sharp knives, cutting boards, mixing bowls, baking dishes and skillets are what we use most; however, you may find that you can also use a food processor or blender.

  • Online Class: How to Cook Real Food: We recommend mixing bowls, sharp knives, cutting boards, baking dishes, saucepans and a food processor or blender. Mason jars, a vegetable fermenter or a fermentation crock can also be helpful but is not required.

What ingredients do I need to purchase?

Nourished Kitchen cooking classes and meal plans are specifically designed to make use of what is available locally and seasonally in your area.  You should not need to purchase many additional ingredients; however, self-propagating starter cultures may be needed for individual classes.

  • Online Class: How to Cook Real Food: This course focuses primarily on foods growing fresh and in season in your area.  You should also consider picking up high quality animal foods such as chicken and beef, good fats like olive oil and butter or ghee.  Kitchen spices and herbs are also helpful.  We will use starter cultures for Lessons #3 and #10 and these include kombucha, water kefir, thermophilic yogurt starter and mesophilic yogurt starter.  It’s also suggested, but not required, that you purchase vegetable starter culture.

What if I only want one or two parts in the multimedia series?

Currently, we do not offer the lessons individually.  If you are interested in purchasing one of the installments individually, you may contact me privately.

How long do I have access to the materials?

At Nourished Kitchen we strongly believe that once you purchase something, it’s yours – for life.  We don’t restrict access, don’t require monthly memberships in order to maintain access to online videos and classes.  You have lifetime access to all materials. Your membership does not expire.

Do I have to log into the online classes at a specific time?

No.  The multimedia series offered at Nourished Kitchen do NOT require you to log in at any specific time.  Instead, installments are posted at a set interval (usually in the evenings) and you can log in to view the videos and download the other materials whenever it suits you.  If that means you log in at 3:00 in the morning, GREAT!  If it means you need to take  a few weeks off and log in later, more power to you.  Nourished Kitchen’s materials are specifically designed to work around your schedule.

  • Online Class: How to Cook Real Food: We will also offer conference call to all class participants on a set schedule.  If you have a question, wish to discuss a component of the series or need to troubleshoot an experience in your kitchen, you can call in.  Even if you can’t or don’t wish to participate in the conference calls, they will be recorded and you can listen to them when it suits you.

What kind of computer equipment or software do I need?

Meal plans and the online courses should work on any PC or Mac.  You may need to download Adobe Acrobat Reader (available here which is free and comes preinstalled on most machines) to view the downloadable and printable materials.  We also highly recommend that you avoid using Internet Explorer in favor of Firefox a free and more secure internet browser. To view videos, you need to have the most recent version of Flash Player installed to view videos.  It comes preinstalled on most machines.

I am sight-/hearing-impaired.  Will I be able to benefit from this course?

We have had a number of people who are sight  or hearing impaired take the course offered at Nourished Kitchen.  For those who are hearing impaired, the videos are easy to follow and do not, necessarily, rely on audio as each video features slides with written copy detailing ingredients/equipment and benefits of the foods we’re preparing.  For those who are sight impaired, you will need to rely on a screen reader.  Some of our sight-impaired students have expressed difficulties with playing the videos; however, most experience no troubles.  You can always get started, and if you decide that the course doesn’t fit your needs, you can let us know within 30 days of the start date and we will happily refund your money.
