Tomato & Cucumber Salad

Tomato and cucumber salad, sparkling with the bright flavors of parsley, fresh lemon juice and a subdued and earthy olive oil, finds its way to our supper table several times a week during the height of the tomato season from early August through mid-September.  Our family loves the simple combination of some of summer’s best [...]

A Recipe: Shrimp Salad with Dill Mayonnaise

Print Friendly and PDF

Shrimp Salad has become one of our favorite treats this summer.  The sweet shrimp combine beautifully with the bright flavors of lemon, dill and the creaminess of a good homemade mayonnaise.  It easy to bring on picnics, to concerts in the park or to serve as a light lunch or supper.  Most importantly, however, is [...]

Recipe: Spiced Kombucha Vinaigrette

Kombucha vinaigrette, may seem like an unusual take on the classic combination of olive oil and balsamic or red wine vinegar, but, when complemented by the unique flavors of clove and allspice it can become a nourishing, if unique dressing for any salad. I find it pairs particularly well with the sweetness of beets, apples, pears and nuts. Reminiscent of apple cider vinegar in combination with club soda, kombucha offers a unique flavor that is growing in popularity as more and more natural foods enthusiasts learn to cherish the beverage – a sweetened tea that undergoes a unique fermentation process through the use of a mother or symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast.

Quinoa is a remarkable grain – rich in magnesium, phosphorus and manganese as well as the amino acid lysine which offers antiviral properties.  Quinoa is not truly a cereal grain in the same manner as wheat or rye; rather, it’s a pseudocereal and, as such, is gluten-free and well-tolerated by those who choose to consume [...]

Nourishing Frugal Foods: Sides, Salads and Desserts

I failed to participate in last week’s Nourishing Frugal Foods carnival, though I had intended to. Things have kind of slipped away from me lately. They just have. This week’s carnival is hosted at Keeper of the Home and focuses on Sides, Salads and Desserts. Though many will disagree with me, I don’t think [...]

Asian-style Ginger Vinaigrette

Print Friendly and PDF

While a simple green salad with a raw cider vinaigrette will always be my choice of salads, that doesn’t always go with every meal and it’s awfully nice to mix things up a bit here and there. For this Asian-inspired Vinaigrette, you’ll need: Tamari Ginger Fish Sauce Brown Rice Vinegar Some Sesame Seeds to [...]

Simple Salad for Those Who Burn Water

Print Friendly and PDF

We eat a salad with every dinner, and often with lunch too.   Making raw or enzyme-enriched foods an essential part of your diet provides you with a good source of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.   Besides, salads are tasty. I prefer to use mixed mesclun lettuce rather than head lettuce (except in [...]
