My Favorite Asparagus Soup

creamy asparagus soup

When spring inches its way forward, there is one recipe that I invariably prepare: asparagus soup.  It’s creamy, but light, and rich with the grassy green herbaceous flavor of asparagus and leeks. Spring comes earlier to the region around us than it comes to the mountain itself.  After a long and grey-white winter, when March [...]

Sourdough Black Forest Cake

In our home, one of our favorite cakes for special occasions is Black Forest Cake, a scrumptious torte made from layers of dark chocolate cake, sour cherries, and cherry-flavored whipped cream. As we’ve sought to eat more nourishing and traditional foods, I’ve wondered how best to prepare the rare sweet treat like this one, but [...]

A Recipe: Pumpkin Custard for the Thanksgiving Table

Print Friendly and PDF

Pumpkin custard, faintly sweet and deeply nourishing, finds its way to our Thanksgiving table each year.  One of my favorite desserts, pumpkin custard is suitable for those who adhere to gluten- or grain-free diets, serving as a perfect and elegant substitute for classic pumpkin pie.  I love the gentle sweetness, the rich and creamy texture [...]

Strawberry & Rhubarb Compote with Honey Custard

Print Friendly and PDF

Spring inches its way forward, blossom by blossom, bee by bee and leaf by leaf, but in the high country, winter still sleeps soundly at my doorstep, snow continues to fall with unyielding abandon and I crave the sun. So we pack our bags, hop in the car, and hightail it out of the valley [...]

nostalgia for summer: flaugnarde with roasted berries

Print Friendly and PDF

Flaugnarde, a sort of rustic custard reminiscent of classic cherry clafoutis, sweetened our breakfast table this week. It’s a simple dessert, flaugnarde.  Fresh cream, wildflower honey, farm eggs and fruit.  There’s beauty in simplicity, in the charming humility of foods in their fresh and naked state, bewitching in its shy   luminescence.   It’s perhaps Curnonsky who [...]

a vintage recipe: cream of chicken soup

Print Friendly and PDF

Cream of chicken soup, real cream of chicken soup, doesn’t come from a red and white can, folks. Real cream of chicken soup is homemade, from scratch and lovingly tended as it simmers.  Buttery, rich with the flavor of chicken, and irrepressibly smooth, it’s a nourishing dish with an old-fashioned, and almost timeless charm (skip straight to [...]

Recipe: Homemade Orange Creamsicles

Print Friendly and PDF

Creamsicles.  Don’t you love them?  I mean, really now, how can you not adore them in all their icy, creamy glory.  And when you taste homemade creamsicle, you’ll never miss the prepackaged, boxed versions. The other day, my son and I were resting on the soft grass in our front lawn, gazing at the clouds [...]

A Recipe: Fresh Herb Frittata

Print Friendly and PDF

Herb Fritattas, fluffy and light, are remarkably versatile and when hens in the valley are producing at their height and the farmers market is chugging along, we often find four dozen (or more!) eggs in the kitchen each week.  And, as the season progresses, that number dwindles until the darkest days of winter when we’ve [...]

Sourdough French Toast with Maple and Cinnamon

Print Friendly and PDF

This version of french toast makes use of sourdough bread with its wonderful and rich tartness, pairing it against a sweetness provided by maple syrup. I find that grade B maple syrup offers a more complex flavor for a better price than grade A maple syrup, and recommend it in this and in other recipes (mmm … sprouted spelt shortbread.) Of course, one could omit maple syrup entirely from this recipe and serve it unsweetened, perhaps paired only with fruit and fresh cream for an equally charming breakfast.

Recipe: Olive Oil Ice Cream with Blood Oranges

Print Friendly and PDF

Olive oil ice cream with blood oranges, inspired by these olive oil recipes, recently found its way to our kitchen with our first bottles of fresh, raw milk for the year.  In this recipe for olive oil ice cream, the inclusion of a good quality unrefined, extra virgin olive oil is essential.  The flavor of [...]
