This post is part of Real Food Wednesday’s focus on frugal real foods. I’m taking the easy way out, though, and rather than surprise you with something new, I thought I’d highlight some classic, frugal recipes from the Nourished Kitchen recipe collection.
- Baked Oats will feed your family breakfast for a week on less than $10.
- Kale & White Bean Soup serves up 8 – 10 portions for under $1.50 a portion.
- Apples & Pears Sauteed in Butter provides an inexpensive and nourishing dessert for 6 at less than $8.
Tips for reducing costs:
- Bake your own bread. In our house the savings amount to $7.36 per loaf!
- Make your own bone broths and stocks. In addition to being nourishing, it saves you the expense of buying inferior stocks at the store.
- Offer to volunteer at a farmers market or coordinate a CSA to get fresh, organic, local foods on your table regularly.

OK, I’ll stop commenting now. I just wanna keep playing with Comment Luv!

Ooooh, the fruit cooked in butter sounds soooo good, especially since I’ve been low-carbing it for a while now. I’d never thought of that for a healthy dessert idea!

And one huge way to be frugal is to eat in season. My son saw peaches the other day at the store. $2.99/pound vs. organic apples/pears for $1/pound. Or the frozen berries, canned peaches and applesauce we have stored.

We love fruit sauted in Coconut Oil. Especially apples and then sprinkle with a little Cardamom
