Pantry Challenge: Week 1

So we meal-planned (check it out here) but are otherwise feeling very secure with our stocked pantry.   We’re still nursing last week’s shopping trip and the loads of squash, potatoes, onions and preserved foods so not spending on groceries hasn’t quite hit us yet.

So far we’ve spent nothing on food in December (which is easy to say given that we’re only 3 days into the month).   We’ll see how close we come toward the end of the month.   My goal for this next week is to fully inventory our pantry, cupboards and freezer so I have a better feel for what we have and how to use it.

So, Money Spent on Food in December: $0.00

I’ve completed our food storage inventory and posted in online–there’s a link from my blog. It’s pretty thorough, but I have to admit I did not include every little condiment in our fridge or some miscellaneous things in our kitchen cabinets. This was an interesting exercise, nevertheless, and I’m glad to have it done!

Yesterday was our raw milk pick up day and that was $20. I also spent $26.88 on cream and veggies at the co-op, bringing our total for the week to $46.88, nearly $17 over our weekly budget but since we didn’t spend anything on food for the first week of December and I don’t expect to spend any more for another week, we’re still on track for spending less than an *average* of $30/week. I hope that falls within the rules of the challenge! Looking forward to hearing how everyone else is doing. Tonight we’re having borscht, with homemade sour beets and sauerreuben, potatoes, and meat leftover from a pot roast I made Tuesday. Yum!
