Nourishing Frugal Foods: Sides, Salads and Desserts

I failed to participate in last week’s Nourishing Frugal Foods carnival, though I had intended to. Things have kind of slipped away from me lately. They just have. This week’s carnival is hosted at Keeper of the Home and focuses on Sides, Salads and Desserts.

Though many will disagree with me, I don’t think eating a wholesome diet based on traditionally-prepared food needs or should be expensive; rather, proper kitchen management and a being mindful of crops, harvest and using every bit you can will help minimize the cost associated with buying grass-fed meats, pastured eggs and poultry, raw dairy or local and sustainably grown fruits and vegetables. You can read more of my take on food and money here.

What people are saying

  1. Oh my goodness, that blueberry clafoutis looks good! I just picked a bunch of unsprayed raspberries yesterday, and am going back for more on Saturday, so I’m thinking that recipe is a must try. I love how easy it is!

The mashed potatoes look lovely as well. I need the inspiration to add more herbs to mine, as sometimes I make them a bit too boring for my hubby’s liking.

And I fully agree that cooking with whole foods does not have to be expensive, and the way that we manage our food and kitchen certainly makes a huge difference. For me the struggle right now is just the continual rise in price- one week it’s free-run eggs, the next week it’s my 25 lbs of spelt berries doubling, etc, etc. It really encourages me to cook more simply with what I have, though, and I have never been so thankful to have a garden overflowing with great produce!

So glad you joined the carnival this week!

Yum! We make a similar salad and potatoes recipe here, my husband likes my homemade vinaigrette better than any bottled variety!, but that clafouti recipe looks out of this world! I love to bake and love fresh fruit desserts so this is a win-win from all directions! My son would love it!

    Best,
